How to Choose an Air Conditioner

There are three general types of air conditioners: the standard central unit, the window unit, and the ductless mini split. They differ in cost, function, and energy usage. The last factor is important, as air conditioners use a good deal of energy, and choosing the right air conditioner and making smart usage decisions can help reduce the energy yours uses.

Choose your unit by considering the factors below.

• Central Air Conditioning: These traditional units are located inside and/or outside the property and use ducts to force cool air to the entire interior. The cost of installation depends on what a customer wants and needs.
• Ductless Mini Splits: These systems use an indoor air handling unit that is connected to a condenser located on the exterior of the property. The systems do not use air ducts, which makes them an excellent option for properties without existing ductwork. Mini splits are also great for home additions, a cold master bedroom, garages, in-law suites and similar spaces.
• Window Air Conditioning: These units are attached to the window or windows and can often be powered by a simple plug. Window units can only cool the room they are installed in, which can be beneficial depending on your needs.
• You may also choose an evaporative cooler if your climate supports it.
