Why Dust is Your #1 Enemy Here in the Tri-Cities

Pasco gets less rain each year than Tucson, Arizona. That is not a typo, and it explains a lot about your bookshelf.

We live in a desert (really)

The Cascades catch most of the rain heading east, which leaves the Tri-Cities with around 7 to 8 inches a year. Tucson gets about 10. Our sagebrush country is technically shrub-steppe desert, and desert means dust. Add our famous wind, plus harvest season kicking up whole fields of it, and you get that fine powder that lands on every surface in your house about a day after you clean.

Annoying for your furniture, sure. But the machine that suffers most is the one that moves all your air.

What dust does to your heating and cooling system

Your system pulls in household air, conditions it, and sends it back out through the ducts, over and over, all day. Every pass, some dust comes along for the ride. Filters catch a lot of it. Around here, they catch SO much of it that the “replace every 90 days” advice printed on the package does not really apply. In a Tri-Cities summer, a filter can load up in half that time.

A clogged filter chokes airflow, and the dust that sneaks past it coats the blower and the indoor coil. A dust-coated system works harder, costs more to run, and wears out sooner. It also keeps recirculating the very dust you were hoping to see less of.

The sneakier problem: your ducts

Here is the part most people have never heard. Duct systems leak, and leaky ducts do not just lose the air you paid to heat or cool. On the return side, they actively PULL air in from wherever they run, usually the attic or crawlspace. That air never touches your filter. It goes straight into the system, dust and all, then gets blown into your living room.

If you feel like you dust constantly and it never gets better, your ducts may be importing the problem.

Two things worth doing before fall

First, check your filter monthly and change it when it looks gray. It is a cheap part protecting an expensive system.

Second, ask us about duct sealing. Sealing closes those leaks so your system only breathes air that came through the filter. Homeowners are often surprised how much less dusting they do afterward, and the system runs easier too.
