A panel that has run out of room tells you in small ways
Breakers that trip on a hot afternoon, a cover that feels warm to the hand, a smell of hot plastic near the panel, and no spare spaces for a new circuit are the usual signs. Tandem breakers squeezed into slots to gain room, and extension cords doing the work of missing outlets, tell the same story in a different way.
Some panels are a problem of age rather than size. Bus bars pit and loosen, breakers lose their tripping accuracy, and old fuse boxes leave you nowhere to grow. An electrician can tell which one you have as soon as the cover is off, and can show you the part that worries them.
Tri-Cities homes lean on the service hard. Central air runs most of the summer, a heat pump or electric heat takes over in the cold snaps, and a hot tub, an EV charger or a shop building can arrive on top of a panel sized for a house from the 1970s.

Upgrade day runs from the meter base to the grounding electrode
A panel upgrade is a coordinated day. Power to the house has to be off while the work is done, so the electrician plans the outage with you and the utility. The service equipment gets replaced: the meter base and mast where they are worn, then the main breaker and the panel, and then every branch circuit is landed again on a fresh breaker.
Each conductor is checked before it goes on a new breaker. Aluminium service conductors get anti oxidant compound, lugs are tightened to the maker's torque figure, and the neutral and ground bars are set up as the panel is designed for: bonded together in the main panel and kept separate in any subpanel. The grounding electrode conductor is tied back to the ground rods and checked.
Once the panel is live, every circuit is tested, the GFCI and AFCI breakers are pressed, and the directory is written out again by hand so that each label matches the wire behind it. Damaged or outdated parts leave with the old panel, so you are not left with a box of them in the garage.

What the new service lets the house do
A larger, cleaner panel gives the house room to add loads without stacking breakers. A heat pump can go in, an EV charger can share the service, and a hot tub or a garage workshop can have its own feeder. Ask the electrician what the service can carry, in plain numbers, before you buy the big new thing.
It also tends to end the small annoyances. Breakers stop tripping for no reason, lights dim less when the air conditioner starts, and a cover that used to run warm stays cool. If any of that returns, call and have the panel opened again, because a loose lug shows itself well before it fails.
