A drain slows for weeks before it stops
A drain does not pick the day it gives up. Grease cools and coats the inside of a kitchen line, hair and soap scum gather at the P-trap under a bathroom sink, and a little more sticks every week until one heavy load of laundry backs water up into the tub. The gurgle when another fixture drains and the slow swirl in the sink are the warning.
The Tri-Cities adds its own layer. Our water is hard and mineral-heavy, so scale builds a rough crust inside older steel and cast iron drain lines, and that crust catches everything that follows. A pipe that has narrowed by a third will clog again a month after a quick punch-through, no matter who did the punching.

The right tool depends on where the clog sits
A-One starts by working out where the blockage is. A clog in one sink lives in the trap or the branch line, so we pull the trap and use a hand auger. A clog that shows in the tub and the toilet together sits further downstream, and that calls for a cable machine run through the cleanout, with a cutting head sized to the pipe. Guessing the tool is how a line gets scratched or only half cleared.
We run the cable until it comes back clean, then flush the line with water to prove it flows. We also look at what the cable brings out. Grease, roots, scale and a child's toy each point to a different cause. Where a line is in bad enough shape that clearing will not hold, the plumber says so and talks through inspection and repair of the run.
Chapter 03
Keeping the line open after we leave
Most repeat clogs come from habit, not bad luck. Cooking grease goes into a can, not the sink. A drain screen catches hair in the shower. Wipes sold as flushable belong in the trash, and fibrous scraps like celery and potato peel wrap around whatever is already stuck in a disposal line.
Tell us if the same drain slows down again within a few weeks. That points to a partial obstruction or a sag in the pipe, not a fresh clog. Homes in older parts of Pasco and Kennewick with original cast iron or clay lines are the likeliest to need a second look at the main, and it is better to hear that early than after a backup.
